A new era for a service supporting African initiatives

For some years now we have been making annual trips to Africa as part of our service in supporting African initiatives in education and development. After consulting with our major partners in Africa, we have decided to discontinue these trips and continue our support entirely from Australia. There are two major reasons for this:

1. Stuart will be 80 this October and Joy is not far behind and such long travel is exhausting.

2. The travel is costly and, with us no longer earning, we cannot afford the cost.

We will miss the face to face contact, as will our African partners but we are all agreed that it is the wisest course to take.

The projects that will continue are:

Unversity of Fort Hare: South Africa

This will involve primarily the supervision of research students in Development Studies. One is in the final stage of a PhD while another has just begun his research. It may involve other tasks that the Dean of the Faculty, Prof Dovhani Thakhathi (right) wishes us to undertake.

It will also involve doing what we can to support rural co-operatives in South Africa to provide food for the current food shortage being experiened by large numbers of people in South Africa's rural areas.

Centre for the Promotion of Christian Higher Education in Africa (CPCHEA)

This is an African initiative working in collaboration with the International Association for Christian Higher Education, as well as African institutions and relevant networks. Its membership is growing, in spite of a lack of funding.

It organised a successful "Faculty Enrichment Programme" conference for West Africa in Nigeria earlier this year in collaboration with the African division of the Association for Christian Schools International and World Wide Christian Schools. Similar conferences are planned for coming months for East Africa, Southern Africa, and hopefully Central Africa.

Stuart is a member of the governing council of this organisation and Managing Editor of its journal, "The African Journal for Transformational Scholarship". In the latter role, Joy is an invaluable partner with her proof reading skills and wise counsel.

The Mutua family

We also provide advice and technical support for the CPCHEA Secretariat headed by the Director, Isaac Njaramba Mutua, who is based in Kitale, Kenya. This includes designing and maintaining the organisation's web site (http://cpchea.org) and providing state of the art web discussion forums to facilitate interaction.

St. John's University of Tanzania

Recently, we have been providing some support by way of advice and guidance for St. John's University of Tanzania located in the capital, Dodoma. This is a vigorous young institution within the Anglican comunion providing a wide range of courses with Faculties of Commerce and Business, Hunanities and Education, Science and Applied Technology, and Schools of Nursing, Pharmacy and Theology. We plan to continue this kind of support to this promising young institution.

One last thing!

We also anticipate that we will have more time for writing books that have been on our agenda for some time. The first one is tentatively entitled "Re-designing Education for the 21st Century"
